On The Fourth of July, Thank the Most Important Founding Father: Haiti’s Jean-Jacques Dessalines

by Pascal Robert

This article previously appeared in Thought Merchant.

“Napoleon’s defeat forced him to give up his plans of conquering North America and the United States.”

With the rise of Donald Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2016 presidential election, a reactionary nativism has taken hold in America. Resentment towards immigrants and Muslims has found solace in Trump’s promises to “build a wall” between Mexico and the United States, as well as deny further entry to Muslim immigrants. These themes have generated a White nationalistic fervor among Americans who believe they want to “take their country back,” and “make America great again.”

What is both ironic and comical about the pleas of these reactionary American nativists is that they are premised on ridiculous White settler colonial myths about the founding of America. The mythology assumes America was founded on notions of liberty and freedom when, in reality, those rights were originally only assured to land-owning White males. What is more important in deflating this pedestrian narrative about American history’s “debt” to its bourgeois slave owning revolutionary origins, is that the most important person in assuring this settler colonial project called America was not aborted less than 30 years after the July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence, was a former Black slave who helped lead an army of his fellows against three European Empires to free his people: Jean-Jacques Dessalines, founder of the independent nation of Haiti.

“But the prejudice of race alone blinded the American people [to] the debt they owed to the desperate courage of 500,000 Haitian Negroes who would not be enslaved.” — Henry Adams, direct decedent of John Adams and America’s foremost Historian of the 18th and 19th centuries

After defeating one of the greatest military expeditions in the history of the British Empire,

“The most important person in assuring this settler colonial project called America was not aborted less than 30 years after the July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence, was a former Black slave.”

L’Ouverture’s second in command, General Jean Jacques Desssalines was charged with the task of ultimately defeating Napoleon Bonaparte’s massive army from the years of 1802-1803, after Toussaint was captured by Bonaparte’s emissaries and sent back to France to die imprisoned.

What is lost on most Americans is that Napoleon Bonaparte, renowned as one of the greatest military minds in Western history, was not merely intent on conquering the former African slaves in Haiti, but also using the opportunity to plant a military expedition in New Orleans large enough to conquer North America and then president Thomas Jefferson’s United States. Hence making the newly independent United States a subject and colony of the French Empire.

“[Napoleon] set his sights on a new goal: restoring the imperial crown’s finest jewel, the lost Saint-Domingue/Haiti. In 1801, he sent the largest invasion fleet that ever crossed the Atlantic, some 50,000 men, to the island under the leadership of his brother-in-law Charles LeClerc. Their mission was to decapitate the ex-slave leadership of Saint-Domingue/Haiti. “No more gilded Africans,” Napoleon commanded. Subdue any resistance by deception and force. Return to slavery all the Africans who survived.

Napoleon had also assembled a second army, and he had given it a second assignment. In 1800, he had concluded a secret treaty that “retroceded” Louisiana to French control after 37 years in Spanish hands. This second army was to go to Louisiana and plant the French flag. And at 20,000 men strong, it was larger than the entire U.S. Army. Napoleon had already conquered one revolutionary republic [France] from within. He was sending a mighty army to take another by brute force [The United States of America].” – The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism, Edward E. Baptist

In the eyes of many Americans today, deluded with America’s current military prowess, the notion of Thomas Jefferson and the United States ever being concerned about a threat from France may seem ridiculous. What such ahistorical analysis ignores is that Thomas Jefferson himself, drafter of America’s Declaration of Independence, was so terrified at the prospect of Napoleon’s army in Louisiana that he publicly stated that Napoleon’s mere presence may force the newly independent United States to run back to cower under the protection of Great Britain’s military.

“And yet, as Jefferson now instructed his envoy to Paris, Robert Livingston, ‘there is on the globe one single spot, the possessor of which is our natural and habitual enemy. It is New Orleans.’ Jefferson had to open the Mississippi one way or the other. ‘Should a French army occupy New Orleans,’ wrote Jefferson, ‘we must marry ourselves to the British fleet and Nation.’”— The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism, Edward E. Baptist

Thomas Jefferson, America’s founding father, was cowering in fear about the prospect of fighting Napoleon’s Army. The same army the Haitian former slaves had been bravely vanquishing and eventually totally defeated under the leadership of Jean Jacques Dessalines. So much for the idea of American exceptionalism.

Dessalines planned a war of extermination of every Frenchman on the Island.”

The capture of Toussaint L’Ouverture on June 7, 1802, instead of weakening the Haitian resistance in fact strengthened it. Toussaint was one of the more moderate Haitian Revolutionary leaders, and he was replaced as head of the Black rebellion by the most feared and brutal of his Generals: Jean Jacques Dessalines. Dessalines planned a war of extermination of every Frenchman on the Island using the revolutionary call “Koupe Tete, Boule Kaye” meaning “Cut off their heads, and burn their houses,” – referring to all French soldiers and Frenchmen in sight.

“By the middle of 1802, the first wave of French forces had withered away [in Saint Domingue/Haiti]. Napoleon reluctantly diverted the Louisiana Army [20,000 soldiers] to Saint Domingue/Haiti. Then this second expedition was also destroyed. So even as Toussaint L’Ouverture shivered in his cell across the ocean, the army he left behind [under Jean Jacques Dessalines] became the first to deal a decisive defeat to Napoleon’s ambitions. Damn sugar, damn coffee, damn colonies,” the first of the Whites [Napoleon] was heard to grumble into his cup at a state dinner. “– The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism, Edward E. Baptist.

After vanquishing Napoleon’s forces in Port Au Prince and Les Cayes, Napoleon’s remaining army retreated to Au Cap, Haiti, to be defeated in the final battle of the Haitian Revolution, the Battle of Vertieres, November 18, 1803. This final defeat of the remains of Napoleon’s massive expedition was so demoralizing that it not only forced Napoleon to give up his plans of conquering North America and the United States, it compelled him to enter an agreement that would change the history and trajectory of the United States forever, literally giving birth to the nation it was to become: Napoleon consummated The Louisiana Purchase. Again, this was only possible because of the Haitian Army lead by Jean Jacques Dessalines.

“The treaty would change the trajectory of the United States forever.”

Thomas Jefferson expected to only benefit from the situation by acquiring the city of New Orleans. So important was that port to the potential development of the United States, he was more than thrilled with the possibility of acquiring merely that city from Napoleon. The extent of Bonaparte’s demoralized defeat at the hands of Jean Jacques Dessalines and the Haitian army was demonstrated by the dimensions of the deal he consummated with Thomas Jefferson’s representative in Paris:

“Napoleon’s minion shocked Livingston [Thomas Jefferson’s representative] almost out of his knee breeches with an astonishing offer: not just New Orleans, but all of French Louisiana–the whole west bank of the Mississippi and its tributaries. now the United States was offered–for a mere $15 million–828,000 square miles, 530 million acres at three cents per acre. This vast expanse doubled the nations size. Eventually the land form the Louisiana Purchase would become all or part of fifteen states. It still accounts for almost a quarter of the surface area of the United States. By the late twentieth century Jefferson’s windfall would be feeding much of the world. One imagines that Livingston found it hard to hold his poker face steady. He immediately agreed to the deal. – The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism,” Edward E. Baptist.

The efforts of Jean Jacques Dessalines and the Haitian Revolutionary army not only protected the fledgling United States from impending French conquest, the defeat of Napoleon by the brave Haitian former slaves gave America the land mass that would propel it into being one of the most powerful nations in history. None of this would have been possible without the bravery of the Haitian people who would not be enslaved.

“To the deadly climate of Saint Domingue/Haiti and the courage and obstinate resistance made by its Black inhabitants are we indebted…[The] truth is, Bonaparte found himself absolutely compelled’–and not by Jefferson–“to relinquish his daring plan of colonizing the banks of the Mississippi.” — Alexander Hamilton. Quote from: “The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism,” Edward E. Baptist.

The Haitian Revolution saved Jefferson’s United States from eventual conquest by Napoleon who placed 20,000 soldiers (more than the entire United States Army at the time) in New Orleans to invade North America after he foolishly thought he could defeat the Haitian Revolutionary Army. Those 20,000 soldiers had to be sent to Haiti to quell the rebellion and were subsequently defeated. Napoleon then sold all the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi to Thomas Jefferson for three cents per acre. This is the real story of how America was made great. Next time some Trump supporters wish to pop off about “taking their country back,” just remind them they should thank God and the Haitian people that they even have a country.

A Couple of Questions on Dallas…then I’m Gone Again

From the Melanated Man:

I have some thoughts on the police shootings in Dallas last night that makes me skeptical. And again, my condolences go out to the families of policemen who lost their lives. I don’t condone this type of retaliation.

But any who…

1. I don’t know in detail the type of sniper rifles that were used, but if the snipers were BLACK, how in the WORLD were they able to obtain these guns without any type of surveillance from the FBI or NSA picking this up?

Because whether you acknowledge or not, BLACKS are heavily surveillance on the low.

2. There were peaceful protest demonstrations taking place across the entire nation last night. Why Dallas? What made Dallas the perfect target for an obvious planned attack?

3. What type of consequences will take place after what they are call “the deadliest day for law enforcement since 9/11?” What’s the end game? Because mass shootings have become about as normal as the SUNSET these days. Will it lead to…

…more police brutality?

….stricter gun laws, further disarming the American people of the Second Amendment rights?

…eventual MARTIAL LAW?

Just something to think about…

(Enough of the gloom and doom. I’m going back on my mainstream media hiatus! Looking at you wifey and brother, NO MORE UPDATES!!)

Peace and love to melanated family,

The Melanated Man

Wake Me Up When We Decide to Break Away…FOR GOOD!!!

145526-147428

From the Melanated Man:

(I consider this a waste of my time writing about this, but for some reason we’re missing the point. This is my two cents and I’m done with it FOREVER!)

First off, my condolences go out to the families of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. I can only imagine the grief and heartache they are going through with the deaths of their loved ones, young BLACK-MELANATED MEN.

And I saw the videos (smh.) Does this SHIT still happen in 2016???

It’s a FUCKING DAMN SHAME.

But…

Fortunately and unfortunately (for most of us full of fear!) the ball is in OUR court, BLACK ladies and especially BLACK gentlemen.

Police brutality has occurred since time immoral, having been trained to kill BLACKS on the low to keep them docile. This is  reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan’s Reign of Terror during Reconstruction Era and the slave patrols during slavery times.

It’s nothing new, just being broadcast more frequently by the mainstream media (hmm I wonder?)

So what’s THEIR agenda?

I can entertain the notion (or conspiracy theory!) that the-powers-that-be secretly want to stoke the emotional fire of the masses to create some superficial race war between black and whites and whomever to bring about martial law so the government can have even MORE control of the lives of AmeriKKKan citizens.

(Note: I wrote this prior to the shootings in Dallas  last night and again, my condolences go out to the families of the policemen who were killed. But something seems suspect about that entire ordeal. Are THEY really trying to instigate chaos? This looks like beautiful movie orchestration, where’s my popcorn?!)

That leads to statements such as…

“Well, forget that nonsense. We just need to all get along and get on the same page. We are all the same anyways.”

Orrrr… (in my Michael Jackson singing voice): “We are the world, we are the children, we are the ones to make a brighter day, so let’s start giving!”

And forced fed ideas of interracial marriage, affirmative action (filling the quota), and forms of unwanted integration tactics and colorblind BRAINWASHING.

Nevertheless, we are still unwanted and considered 3/5 of a Caucasian man/woman!

Leading us back to SQUARE ONE along the Merry-Go-Round!

THEY don’t want to accept US… .but… they don’t want US to separate EITHER!

So WHICH one is it?

In my honest, humble opinion…

The-powers-that-be, Massa, the top 1%, whoever, realize the  that BLACK-MELANATED PEOPLE built this SHIT (the United States in all its glory and splendor) and are the ONES who are  perpetuating the SHIT’S (the hegemony, THE MATRIX) continuance with our voluntary participation!

And they know that their common, ordinary Caucasian, European brethren are too dumb to realize this simple FACT!!

So to keep peace, however tenuous, they appease them with the Good Ole Boy policy, to keep them fed and docile as much as possible…

…in the process trying ever so hard to PREACH the importance of accepting and integrating with BLACKS…

all the while leaving the TRUE MONEYMAKERS PERMANENTLY BEGGING FOR SCRAPS, IF WE SO CHOOSE TO!!!

And by golly, we continue to BEG!

When are we going to come to the conclusion that this world, this setup, this MATRIX is not geared toward our survival, our THRIVAL?

That it’s geared to THEIRS!

Are we that afraid to separate COMPLETELY as a people, with NO HAND-OUTS WHATSOEVER…OR UNWARRANTED GUILT PLACED ON OUR CONSCIOUS FROM THE “OTHERS”?

The Civil Rights Movement was the biggest con game

Are we incapable of building our OWN EMPIRE (again?) and protecting it “by any means necessary?”

I know about the Tulsa Race Riots and other situations like it,  so I understand our fear.

But there’s breaking point…

AND I’m ready to break FREE, physically and metaphysically.

But I don’t want go alone.

I need MORE of my BLACK-MELANATED BROTHER and SISTERS to become conscious so we can RISE UP OUT OF THIS BULLSHIT FOR GOOD!

We are being exterminated in every way imaginable!

I’m not a cockroach!! And DAMN IT, neither are YOU!!

LET’S GET TO WORK, PEOPLE!!!

(And seriously, I’m ONE AND DONE with the police brutality discussion. I’m tired of hearing about it so I definitely have little energy for discussing it. We already know what we need to do. Now back to my hiatus.)

Peace and Love to my melanated family,

The Melanated Man

Reblog: Police Rule African-American Man Found Hanging in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park Suicide, Black Twitter isn’t Buying it

Reports of a Black body found hanged in a tree at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park began circulating on social media early Thursday morning.

Amid recent high-profile incidents of violence against African-American men, many were quick to deem the tragedy a “modern day lynching.” But spokesman for the Atlanta Police Department, Donald Hannah, said it’s nothing of the sort.

According to authorities, the person found was the victim of an apparent suicide. Atlanta PD told Atlanta Black Star via Twitter that officers were called to the Charles Allen entrance of the park just before 5 o’clock Thursday morning when they discovered a man’s body hanging from a tree by a rope. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There were no discernible signs of a struggle or foul play,” Hannah said.  “A Fulton County medical examiner concurred that the death was consistent with a suicide.”

According to a direct message from Atlanta PD’s official Twitter account, the individual found hanged was an African-American male,  aged 25-35.

Medical examiner “Hagar assumed custody of the unidentified body,” the message stated. “Atlanta Crime Scene Unit L. Robertson photographed the scene. Final cause and manner of death are pending autopsy.”

Although officials have ruled the man’s death a suicide, Black Twitter isn’t buying it.

A Reblog: Brexit: A Nail in the Coffin of Neo-colonialism in Africa

Originally published on BLACK AGENDA REPORT:

While much of the discourse and debate around the UK referendum to leave the European Union (EU), a move known as Brexit (= Britain + exit), seems centered solely on its impact on Britain, Western Europe as a whole, and the U.S., Foreign Policy Magazine (FP) warns us, “Brexit Is Bad News for Africa. Period.” Before listing a litany of cons, from the “loss of British leadership in places like Somalia” to “South Africa, where many large companies are co-listed on the London Stock Exchange,” FP explains a re-worked UK-Africa policy, “even unencumbered by EU inefficiencies, …will leave Britain with a fraction of the influence it currently wields in Africa.” It will also disrupt if not discontinue many UK-led EU initiatives in Africa, according to FP.

The Thursday June 23rd referendum turned out 71.8% of UK voters, deciding 52% to 48% to leave the EU. It was the highest turnout in a UK-wide vote since the 1992 general election.

For some, Brexit has called into question the purpose of the EU and for some white liberals it has sparked concern over the possibility that it marks the end of internationalism. “The UK will split apart as Scotland goes ahead with a second vote on its own independence. Referendums on EU membership will follow in France and in the Netherlands. Brexit would be a tipping point for the Swedes and their growing Euroskepticism. Economic contagion could spread to Ireland, which is so closely linked to the British economy, and to Portugal, which is so close to default.”

“Europe eliminated or overrode most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance.”

After the EU comes apart at the seams, then perhaps all the various international efforts to pool resources and find common purpose — NATO, ASEAN, the OAS — will suffer a similar failure to cohere.

Surely all of this spells disaster for the whole world, yes?

The 1993 formalizing of the EU was for Africa no different than the 1884 Berlin Conference where Europe united to regulate and cooperate in its Scramble for Africa during heightened colonial activity by European powers. This predecessor union of Europe eliminated or overrode most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance. Today in Africa the EU plays the role of enforcing neo-colonialism through its Africa Working Party (COAFR) and so-called Africa-EU Strategic Partnership that ensure neo-liberal economic policies dominate Africa. We can be sure that when the partnership claims to cooperate on issues like governance and human rights it is not talking about how European countries are governed or human rights abuses in those countries. It is based on the paternalistic premise that Africa is inherently savage and contemporarily corrupt and naturally prone to abusing human rights.

Believing Brexit could represent the beginning of the end for international cooperation, as some have put it, is to believe that the world does or should revolve around Europe. The late Pan-Africanist Kwame Ture (aka Stokely Carmichael) pointed out that those whose thinking is dominated by Euro-centrism and white supremacy often mistakenly “make the particular history of Europe the general history of the world.”

Karl Marx demonstrated this when he asserted that religion is the opium of the masses based on its particular history in Europe. Yet ,on the contrary, other parts of the world were able to experience religion in their histories as an enlightening and morally grounding force.

“Euro-centric thinking commits the error of believing that the particular interests of Europe are the same as the general interests of the rest of the world.”

In Walter Rodney’s seminal book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa he explains, “The first significant thing about the internationalization of trade in the 15th century was that Europeans took the initiative and went to other parts of the world. No Chinese boats reached Europe, and if any African canoes reached the Americas (as is sometimes maintained) they did not establish two-way links. What was called international trade was nothing but the extension overseas of European interests. The strategy behind international trade and the production that supported it was firmly in European hands, and specifically, in the hands of the sea-going nations from the North Sea to the Mediterranean.”

In scholarly detail, Rodney outlines how the development of Europe meant the underdevelopment of Africa and vice versa. Through centuries of enslavement, the appropriation and refinement of Africa’s raw materials, setting inequitable terms of trade that favor Europe, and brain drain, and through the rape of Africa and other continents Western Europe has become self-appointed as the First World along with the U.S.

To follow Euro-centric thinking is to also to commit the error of believing that the particular interests of Europe are the same as the general interests of the rest of the world. It assumes that the internationalism facilitated by institutions like the EU, NATO, and the UN serves the best interests of Africa, Latin America and Asia. Fundamentally, the economic and political hegemony enjoyed by both Western Europe and the U.S. is at the expense of the “underdeveloped” world, secured by these institutions.

The epic tug-of-war between the internationalism of communist versus capitalist was not the only type of internationalism to emerge from the 20th century. A non-Western Euro-centric reflection recognizes the history of the movement for Pan-Africanism in the struggle for a united African continent under a socialist government. The original Organization of African Unity (OAU) – now the African Union (AU) – was a direct attempt toward that.

“Today in Africa the EU ensures neo-liberal economic policies dominate Africa.”

There was also the internationalism of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a group of states declaring no formal alignment with or against any major power bloc. Its purpose was to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics.” A milestone of NAM was the 1955 Bandung Conference of Asian and African states hosted by Indonesia that gave a significant contribution to promote the movement under the leadership of President Sukarno.

Then there is the very contemporary internationalism of Latin America, ALBA, (the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America), an intergovernmental organization based on the idea of the social, political and economic integration of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

All of these types of internationalism recognized the inherently inhumane nature of capitalist imperialism but, in addition, understood the need to address the cultural white supremacy and racism of global Euro-centrism.

By playing the overall role of maintaining both the domination of international finance capital and the centrality of Western Europe and the U.S., the EU serves in making these three things virtually synonymous and by no means a friend to Africa regardless of official claims in mission statements and benevolent public pronouncements.

Today the EU enforces sanctions on African countries that attempt to exercise their right to national self-determination or who in anyway don’t submit to the self-appointed benevolence of Western Europe and the U.S. Openly the EU admits that it imposes, “Sanctions – also referred to as restrictive measures – against third countries… to bring about a change in policy or activity by the target country, part of a country, government, entities or individuals.”

“The moral orientation of Western Europe and it’s NATO ally, the U.S., has not changed since the Berlin Conference.”

Currently the EU is imposing sanctions on 37 countries around the world. Sixteen of those are African countries.

Because history has unfolded in a way that the former colonial powers have set the disposition of economic and political power in the world, sanctions can’t really be enforced against the U.S. or Western European countries, making them altogether unjust, immoral and essentially a tool of neo-colonialism.

The moral orientation of Western Europe and it’s NATO ally, the U.S., has not changed since the Berlin Conference, on through to it conspiring to thwart the African independence movement that swept the continent in the 1950-60s, until now with its use of the CIA, MI6, Interpol, USAID, UK’s DFID to maneuver iron fist and velvet glove type strategies to dominate the world and Africa.

If Brexit represents the beginning of the end of the EU, the only appropriate African response would be to celebrate and forge on to make it represent a nail in the coffin of neo-colonialism.

A Repost: The Arrogance of This Tenn. Congressional Candidate as He Explains His Racist ‘Make America White Again’ Billboard is Appalling

A Tennessee politician is facing a storm of backlash after erecting a “Make America White Again” billboard in Polk County.

Third-party congressional candidate for Tennessee’s 3rd District, Rick Tyler tells WTVC that he erected the sign to provoke thought and to get people thinking about pre-1960s America when whites were a “super-majority.”

He wants the “Leave It to Beaver,” “Ozzie and Harriet” America of old. Tyler tells reporters that the America he grew up in was “a better America where there was far less violent time, you could leave your doors unlocked, and you didn’t have carjackings or home invasions.”

A reporter presses the politician about his racism. Without hesitation, Tyler defends his beliefs saying that his preference for white people is called ethnocentrism. Even though many have aligned his beliefs with that of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s, the Tennessee politician calls Trump a “sellout” and a “marquee headliner” for the nation’s biggest reality TV show.

After complaints from local residents, the billboard was taken down last night. Here is one of those complaints:

“This disgusting bunch of bigotry was erected about 20 minutes from our house. The person listed, Mr. Rick Tyler, is a local business owner. Please, if you are the decent and loving people I know you to be, boycott this business,” Amy Hines Woody, a Delano, Tennessee resident wrote on Facebook.

A Reblog: Black 6th Grader Nearly Lynched at School: Officials Deny Responsibility

Black Agenda Report editor and columnist, Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo

KP’s parents thought sending her to a predominately white school would provide a superior education and access to a brighter future. This decision almost cost KP her life.”

A 12-year-old girl, attending the 6th grade at a pricey predominately white school in Waco, Texas, was viciously terrorized and nearly lynched by 3 white male classmates. No charges have been filed against the boys. According to reports, the boys wrapped a swing rope around the neck of the girl, identified as “KP,” knocked her to the ground and dragged her.  “KP” was the target of on-going attacks and assaults by white classmates while she attempted to study at the predominately white Live Oak Classical School in Texas.  This young lady was placed in a hand-to-hand combat situation for which she was utterly unprepared and at the mercy of white school administrators who denied the viciousness of the attacks and refused to protect her.

In 1900, Ida B Wells, newspaper publisher, journalist and anti-lynching activist wrote:

“Our country’s national crime is lynching. It is not the creature of an hour, the sudden outburst of uncontrolled fury, or the unspeakable brutality of an insane mob.”

Ida Wells would have understood that the violence KP confronted was simply the continuation, in the 21st century, of the national “unspeakable brutality” that has laced the history of this country. The attempted murder of KP was an escalation from previous attacks that were condoned by the principal and other school officials.

According to exhibits submitted with a pending $3 million dollar lawsuit, the school’s principal, Allison Buras, in response to KP’s mother’s concerns, wrote that she “would never want children hurting one another” and that she spoke to the boys about the alleged incident.  “It sounds like he may have pushed on the back of her leg to make her leg buckle, which is something the kids sometimes do,” Buras wrote. “Rarely is that done out of meanness but more out of a desire for sport.”

Like many black parents sold on the notion of integration, KP’s parents thought sending her to a predominately white school would provide a superior education and access to a brighter future. This decision almost cost KP her life.

The chaperons did not report the incident to the police or call for medical attention; instead they asked KP to apply Vaseline to her neck and take Motrin to alleviate the pain.”

KP was one of two black students among 20 other children who participated in an overnight trip to a local ranch. Anticipating danger, KP’s mother offered to chaperon the trip but school officials denied her request, choosing instead seven other white parents.

According to reports KP was:

“standing to the side of the swing, three white boys (including one boy who often bullied her) allegedly wrapped the rope around her neck, jerked her to the ground, and didn’t help her up. The rope cut into the entire front of her neck, halfway around her back, and burned her skin.”

When KP told the chaperons about the attack, in what can only be considered complicit behavior, the chaperons did not report the incident to the police or call for medical attention; instead they asked KP to apply Vaseline to her neck and take Motrin to alleviate the pain.

With remarkable consistency, none of the white chaperons bothered to tell Sandy Rougely, KP’s mother about the attempted murder the night before.  When KP’s mother saw her walking from the bus she thought her daughter was wearing a necklace.  She “…looked like somebody had ripped her neck apart and stitched it back together.” Rougely, immediately called an ambulance and took KP to the hospital. Rougely reported that the principal was “shocked when she learned they were going to the emergency room.”

Doctors working in the emergency room, however, thought KP’s injuries were apparently so severe that police were notified and an investigation launched.

The refusal to view KP as a human being continues. Jeremy Counseller, a board member for the school, told the Dallas Morning News “Live Oak takes the safety of its students seriously and is saddened that one of its family suffered an unfortunate accident and injury.” Counseller has described what happened as an “accident.”

The principal was “shocked when she learned they were going to the emergency room.”

This ridiculous babble shows the utter contempt for black life and the lives of our children who attempt to negotiate with white supremacy, begging to be allowed to sit or be miseducated at the same table.

In the face of the attempted lynching of 12 year old child and other young people engaged in daily hand-to-hand combat in white schools it is appropriate to remind ourselves of a brighter and more sustainable future for the African community in the US.

In 1966, The Black Panther Party (BPP) proposed a 10 Point Program of liberation. This program and its goals are still worthy of consideration. On the issue of education, the BPP Program stated:

“We want education for our people that exposes the true nature of this decadent American society. We want education that teaches us our true history and our role in the present day society.”

One of the lessons that we can learn from this tragedy is the ultimate importance of controlling the institutions in our community that preserve the integrity of our lives and provide an environment where our children can be free.

A Reblog: Hillary Clinton: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Hillary Clinton: Something Wicked This Way Comes

If Trump is the “Boogey Man,” then Hillary Clinton is evil in 3D.”

The 2016 (s) election season continues to travel around, much like a traveling circus replete with a xenophobic clown and a wicked witch. What’s more pathetic than this fact, is the fact that there are millions upon millions of people supporting these two candidates. The United States electoral season may be a sham and a joke, however what does that tell any intellectually honest person about the followers that vote for these candidates?

Donald Trump (the xenophobic clown) has a large following of racist white nationalists who crawled out from under their slimy rocks the moment he began spewing his racist rhetoric. He was like the pied piper for racists. However, make no bones about it, these people were racist and xenophobic a long time before Trump came on to the scene. They are hoping that a Trump presidency would bring about a return to some of this country’s more white supremacist policies of years past. Many of Trump’s supporters would like to see an updated “Jim Crow” for the new millennium. This is perhaps what they envision when they hear Donald Trump say, “Make America great again…” However, Hillary Clinton’s supporters are a menagerie of the misguided, in combination with the white liberals who embrace their race-based privilege.

“Many of Trump’s supporters would like to see an updated ‘Jim Crow’ for the new millennium.”

For those who truly believe Hillary Clinton is a candidate committed to bringing about peace and diplomacy–think again. If you believe the Democratic Party is a party of peace and progressive change–think again. If you wish to vote for someone evil who adores war and destroying human life, by way of wars of aggression, then Hillary Clinton is your candidate.

Hillary Clinton was one of the biggest orchestrators of the vicious bombing campaign and war on Libya. She, like Barack Obama, knew exactly what they were doing when they ordered airstrikes on Libya and supported the CIA financing the terrorist rebels on the ground. It was these same terrorist that massacred supporters of Gaddafi, including many black Africans. She is the witch who cackled upon hearing the news Muammar Gaddafi was brutally murdered by those terrorist rebels that the US government supported and financed.

Hillary Clinton instinctively voted for the imperialist war in Iraq. She spoke of the option of potentially bombing Iran. She has played a significant role in the continuation of Haiti being used as a sweatshop for Wall Street and US finance capital. She supported her husband’s move to complete a coup that overthrew the democratically elected president of Haiti, Jean Bertrand Aristide.

“Do not vote for her simply because you think she is a better option than the white supremacist, Donald Trump.”

Hillary Clinton is also the same vile human that referred to African American youth as “Super Predators.” Her mantra should be, “something wicked this way comes…” Do not vote for her simply because you think she is a better option than the white supremacist, Donald Trump. Do not vote for her because you believe she is the lesser of two evils…she is evil, plain and simple. She has a forked-tongue, from which she consistently spews forth lies and deceptions.

Hillary Clinton has done what many think Donald Trump might do as president. She has supported right wing deportation policies of immigrants south of the United States’ manufactured borders. She has started and supported imperialist military campaigns that have destroyed countless lives.

If Trump is the “Boogey Man,” then Hillary Clinton is evil in 3D. She is real and her actions are wicked. Do not vote for her simply because she is a woman. There have been many evil women throughout history, just as there have been evil and wicked men. She is not pro-woman. She is a pro-white elitist woman. Think about the masses of women her polices have destroyed in places like Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan. What about them, or does it make some people happy to say they voted for a woman regardless of her policies? Many made the same mistake in voting for Obama, thinking he was “change you can believe in.” Instead, his slogan should have been, “beliefs you can change.” He bombed at least six countries during his presidency and executed (pun not intended) a deadly drone policy on a massive scale, much more effective than George W. Bush’s.

“She is not pro-woman. She is a pro-white elitist woman.”

Vote for neither Hillary Clinton nor Trump. Do not vote because you are scared of the other candidate. Act and/or vote your conscience. If you seek peace and a better society within the USA, and globally, then that will not come about by voting for either Trump or Clinton. It would be far better to abstain from voting than to live with the fact that you voted for someone hell-bent on destroying human life.

Consider voting for the Green Party or support truly revolutionary candidates who are not only pro-peace but are anti-war. Vote for candidates that are about revolutionary and progressive change. Help support or start movements aimed at ensuring that the next generations inherit a much better society, one predicated on peace, justice, equity and humanitarian values.

A Reblog: America: The Land of Terrorists and Massacres

America: The Land of Terrorists and Massacres

“Historical records remind us that the murders in Orlando, unfortunately, do not constitute the largest domestic mass murders.”

The updated 2016 ROOTS historical chronicle finally got it right. Africans have resisted European/American terrorism from the moment it reared its ugly head to present day struggle against state sponsored police murders of African peoples. The current version of ROOTS reminds us that beheadings, lynchings, rapes, kidnappings, selling children, working and boiling people to death did not start with ISIL – these perverted and psychopathic practices constituted the building blocks of the American empire.  The carnage in Orlando bleeds our hearts with the senseless murder of many innocent lives.  Our rapacious thirst for lethal weapons spells future dooms. Yet, we march on desensitized to the violence and injustice in our nation and world.

We seem to be truly bewildered when blood flows on the streets of America. Often, some of these incidents of late, can contextually be linked to murderous US foreign policy adventures in the Middle East. Malcolm X would have noted that US foreign policies have resulted in “chickens coming home to roost.” The ability to contain violence in foreign theaters has become an unattainable goal for the Empire. Therefore, everyday citizens are now targets of combat. Whether the latest mass murderer is insane or not, what is clear is that US citizens must decide whether they will allow murder and plunder across the globe to continue in their names. And, perhaps, more importantly, whether they are prepared to accept the consequences.  Certainly one does not want to wade into the quagmire of comparing tragedies but to completely ignore the validity of other massacres and the loss of other lives seems to compound the tragedy.

“Malcolm X would have noted that US foreign policies have resulted in ‘chickens coming home to roost.’”

The news media has framed the latest massacre in Orlando as the largest mass murder in US history. Some members of the media with a measure of intellectual integrity will add that the Orlando Massacre is the largest “post 911.” Regardless, human beings lost their lives and communities are in mourning.  However, historical records remind us that the murders in Orlando, unfortunately, do not constitute the largest domestic mass murders.  This narrative proposed by corporate media is in search of a public willing to digest a sanitized and less-than thoughtful version of history that conforms with the simplistic but dangerous notion of American exceptionalism. The truth is much less flattering.  As we mourn the loss of young life in Florida, let us also mourn the massacre of thousands of young unarmed African men and women who lose their lives almost daily at the hands of police and entire Black communities struggling to escape the violence of white supremacy.

We must not forget the East St Louis Massacres of 1917 described as the worst race and labor violence in the 20th century with casualties ranging between 40 and 200 deaths.

In the spring of 1917, Blacks escaping from the terror of the South were arriving in St. Louis at the rate of 2,000 per week. White union workers were determined to stop Blacks from competing for job in the trades by refusing to allow Africans membership in trade unions. White corporate leaders, taking advantage of cheap and competitive labor viewed Africans as scab workers to stabilize and maintain low wages for whites. These two reactionary views of Black labor from the perspective of the white working class and white corporate interests formed the perfect storm that ignited the conditions that led to scores of Black deaths in the East St. Louis Massacre.

“The ability to contain violence in foreign theaters has become an unattainable goal for the Empire.”

Following a meeting on May 28th in which rumors spread that Blacks and whites were fraternizing, 3,000 white men marched into East St. Louis and attacked Black men and women. In a separate incident, white vigilantes burned entire sections of the city and shot inhabitants as they escaped the fire. In William Heaps 1970 book Target of Prejudice: The Negro, In Riot, USA 1765-1970, he notes: “members of the white community claimed that Southern Negros deserved a genuine lynching” and a number of African-Americans were lynched during the white terror attacks.

There was also the 1921 Tulsa, Oklahoma massacre in which whites attacked one of the wealthiest African communities in the US.  These vilgilantes over the course of 16 hours burned private property, including a Black hospital, and injured over 800 people. Instead of police arresting white rioters they detained and arrested over 6,000 black residents. 10,000 Africans were left homeless and 35 city blocks destroyed by fire.  Officials reported that 39 Blacks were murdered but other estimates report between 55 to 300 people murdered.

All massacres are horrific, from Orlando, East St. Louis, My Lai, Vietnam, Wounded Knee to Oklahoma.  The latest massacre, however ‘could’ provide an opportunity to understand the nexus between US foreign policy adventures that plunder and violate countries in search of natural resources and US domestic racist actions that trigger staggering incidence of murder and violence on a scale nearly unfathomable outside America.

A Reblog: Just What We Need: More Black Celebrity Charter School Crooks… I Mean ‘Entrepreneurs’

A Black Agenda Radio Commentary by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

Sean “Diddy” Combs, with accomplices Iyanla Vanzant and privatization hustler Steve Perry are fronting the Capital Prepatory Harlem Charter School. When black celebs put their names on a charter school what does that mean? Are they “giving back” or are they cashing in on the drive to convert public assets into their private property? Are they siding with parents, teachers and communities, or with their own investment portfolios?

Just What We Need: More Black Celebrity Charter School Crooks Entrepreneurs

A Black Agenda Radio Commentary by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

“Since the Clinton era, charter school investments get automatic tax credits that allow investors to double their money in as little as 7 years…”

Celebrities they say, are people who are famous for being well known, while entrepreneurs, in popular lore, are those with a talent for detecting opportunities to get paid, in much the same way crocodiles and sharks smell blood in distant waters. So the celebrity entrepreneur is all about finding ways to leverage that celebrity to get paid.

In this neoliberal age of privatization, the surest way for the well-connected to get paid is to bribe public officials to help you convert public assets into your private property. Look at entrepreneur Ervin “Magic” Johnson, who gave Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel a perfectly legal $250,000 campaign donation and received an $80 million contract to replace the formerly unionized janitors in Chicago Public Schools. That’s entrepreneurship. Now principals in some of those schools are buying mops and brooms out of their own pockets to keep the filth at bay.

Since the Clinton era, charter school investments get automatic tax credits that allow investors to double their money in as little as 7 years. Thanks in part to vigorous lobbying on the state and federal levels by charter schools and their investors and contractors the charter school industry is not subject to the same instructional, operational, fiscal and accounting, or conflict of interest rules as actual public schools. In most states it’s perfectly legal for a charter school operator to give her brother the maintenance contract, her sister the instructional contract and her cousin the textbook contract, to replace the teachers with computer programs, while her own privately held company rents and subleases the school building at a hefty markup, all with public money, and misleadingly call yourself a “public school.”

So it’s no surprise that black celebrity entrepreneurs want in on the charter school racket. Magic Johnson’s name is on a profitable charter school diploma mill chain that substitutes computers for human teachers and awards quick high school diplomas not in its own name but in the name of the public school the student dropped out or was pushed out of. If that’s not educational fraud, it’s hard to imagine what is. Deion Sanders and Jalen Rose have charter school train wrecks named after them, and they’re far from alone. The truth is that black celebrity charter schools are not about giving back, they’re about cashing in. If black celebrities cared about education for black children they’d be siding with parents, students and communities instead of with their investment portfolios.

The latest entries in the charter school feeding frenzy are Sean “Diddy” Combs, with accomplices Steve Perry and Iyanla Vanzant. Together, they’re fronting what’s called the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School, apparently part of the chain of Capital Preparatory operated by Steve Perry, who’s not much more of an “educator” than Diddy, and has a history of abusive and threatening public rhetoric, and advocating the mass firing of qualified, experienced teachers, especially black ones.

“It’s time we looked a lot closer at black celebs who claim to be ‘giving back’…”

Despite PR flourishes like calling its teachers “illuminators,” and occasional references to “social justice” Diddy’s charter school venture looks a lot more like another parasitic business venture than any kind of real educational institution. It’s time we looked a lot closer at black celebs who claim to be “giving back,” and at their kind of black “success stories” as well. The last thing we really need now is more black celebrity charter school crooks… I mean entrepreneurs.
